Short Course: Writing a Page-Turner
November 13, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm£99
‘They say it only takes seven seconds for someone to form an opinion of you. For a busy agent or publisher, you can probably cut that time in half…’
In a world where competition for our attention is increasingly aggressive, how do we keep out readers glued to the page, rather than reaching for the nearest flashing device?
Liam Brown, author of three novels, including the internationally published Broadcast, shares his secrets to crafting a habit-forming text.
From improving characterisation and sharpening dialogue, to creating suspenseful structures and developing a sucker-punch twist, over five weeks we’ll explore the ways you can take your writing to the next level.
Through a series of practical workshop exercises, with plenty of opportunity to share your work and ask questions, this course is ideal for experienced prose writers and beginners alike.
Liam Brown is a novelist and short story writer from Birmingham, England. His first two novels Real Monsters (2015) and Wild Life (2016) were each nominated for the Guardian’s Not the Booker Prize, while his third, Broadcast (2017), has been published internationally and optioned by a major Hollywood studio.
Tuesdays, 6.30pm to 8.30pm, on 13, 20 and 27 November, 4 and 11 December 2018.
Please note: you must sign up for the full course even if you cannot attend all dates. No partial course ticket is available.
Short Courses are for over 18s. If you are a young writer, you can sign up for our Spark Young Writers Programme.
All Writing West Midlands short courses are collaborative, and you will learn as much from your fellow course attendees as from the tutor. You will be expected to play an active role in group tasks, and you will also have time to reflect on your own writing during sessions.
Course handouts are sometimes (but not always) available, and notes may be available in advance upon request. If you have any additional needs, please contact Writing West Midlands in advance of the course starting and we will try to assist you.
