Write On! Young Writers’ Groups
Write On! Young Writers’ groups are writing groups for children and young people interested in any kind of creative writing. Groups are focused on creative writing rather than on spelling or punctuation.
Write On! Young Writers’ Groups give young writers the opportunity to share and develop their writing in small, friendly groups; with each being led by a Lead Writer and an Assistant Writer. Members from our groups have previously shared their work at the Birmingham Literature Festival, Ledbury Poetry Festival, Coventry Mysteries and Wenlock Poetry Festival. Several have also been involved in publications and regularly submit to Write On! Magazine.
If you have any questions about Write On! Young Writers, please have a look at our Write On! Young Writers FAQs page.
Write On! Young Writers’ Groups run between September and June each year, they take a break over the summer. They meet monthly one Saturday a month for up to two hours, some in the mornings and some in the afternoons. Groups are divided roughly into ages 8 – 11, and 12 – 16. There is a charge of £6 per session which is paid on the day of each session and bursaries are available. Groups are limited to 15 participants.
They usually meet in an arts or cultural space (theatres, art galleries, museums, libraries, etc.). We run Young Writers’ Groups across the West Midlands, from Hereford in the south west to Stoke-on-Trent in the north of the region. Current groups are listed at the end of this page.
Many of our Young Writers’ Groups during 2013/14 to 2014/15 are being run as part of our Midlands Young Writers Programme, an initiative jointly managed by Writing West Midlands and Writing East Midlands and generously funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

A little history
Our groups were inspired by the Writing Squads developed in Wales over ten years ago by Literature Wales (formerly the Academi). Similar groups are now also run by New Writing South and Cyprus Well (in the South West). A very successful writing squad for young people aged 16+ is run in Yorkshire currently being expanded to include the North West and North East.
